The Pond at Castlemilk...
This is the pond, now so called, because I get told often on my History Facebook page, by old timers and people like myself that grew up in Castlemilk in the early days of the housing scheme, that it was never 'The Pond'! But is it? It was always known as 'The Lake' and it 'was' known as that when I was small, because it 'was' a lake back then, which never had a centre piece and it also continued under the Bridge to be as large on the other side. But Back then it was seen as dangerous and sadly 2 kids drowned in the very early days, so it was filled in on one side of the bridge and shrunk to just a 'burn' also, they shrunk the size of it by extending the walkway on the side pathway all the way around it. So we called it 'The Lake' and it always will be to the oldies... The extra photo is my friend's taken in the 1970's with no centre piece. In winter it froze over and people used to skate on it... I was always warned not to go near it, but we fished for 'baggy minis' there of course... Happy days...
