Hailuoto

Day 2

We left the hotel around 10:00 and headed to Oulu, Hailuoto.

388 km,  5 h 12 min without break.

North Karelia, Kalix and Northern Ostrobothnia provices are sparsely populated regions, so we mostly saw woodlands on our way. We had one break in Vaala.

We arrived Oulu around 15:30 and checked in to the Original Sokos Hotel Arina. And straight away back to the car and towards Hailuoto island. We took ferry that left 17:00 and it took about 20 minutes to reach Hailuoto.

Hailuoto lies opposite the city of Oulu in the Gulf of Bothnia. The distance between Oulu and Hailuoto is 53 kilometres. Of all the Finnish sea islands, Hailuoto is the third largest after Mainland Åland and Kimito. The population of Hailuoto is 948. Land in the region is constantly rising due to post-glacial rebound. It is estimated that the first parts of Hailuoto appeared from the Baltic Sea about 1700 years ago. The island is continuously expanding and eventually it will join with the continent.

We drove across the whole island to Marjaniemi. There is beautiful lighthouse, fishermans' village and long sandy beach. We had lovely dinner in the restaurant Frans and then we had a walk. We saw three decomposed dead seals on the beach.

We traveled back to continent on the ferry that left Hailuoto at 20:30.

+26,7°C, sunny
