One life to live

Kalajoki

Before we checked out from the hotel we walked to see the Toripoliisi statue, which is one of landmarks of Oulu.

Day 3

600 km, 7 h 30 min

From Oulu we chose the coastal route. We had a lovely break in Kalajoki, sandy beach, Hiekkasärkät. However, our main attraction was Raippaluoto, which is an island next to Vaasa.

Since 1997, Raippaluoto has been connected to the mainland via the Raippaluoto Bridge, replacing the earlier ferry connection which had been in place since 1952. Until these days, the bridge has been the longest bridge ever built in Finland, with a length of 1,045 metres.

Raippaluoto has about 2,100 inhabitants, almost only Swedish-speaking. The size is about 150 square kilometres, and it is one of the largest islands of Finland. There are four major communities on the island, Replot kyrkoby, Norra Vallgrund, Södra Vallgrund and Söderudden,

We drove all the way to the next island, Björkö. A large part of the Raippaluoto archipelago has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We were back home at 22:30. I enjoyed our road trip so much!!
