Mercat Cross

We went across the water into the Kingdom Of Fife this morning and visited the Royal Burgh of Culross (pronounced Cooruss, it seems). It's the most complete example of a burgh of 17th/18th century. A place of industry and trade which gained great importance and then after the death of Sir George Bruce who was responsible for the success from coal mining, salt manufacture and shipping, it declined and became a ghost town. With the start of the National Trust for Scotland it's been preserved much as it was in its heyday whilst still being part of the modern world.

We visited the ochre coloured Culross Palace, not a royal palace but the house of industrialist George Bruce. The town has been used in many films and TV series, in particular, 'Outlander' and the square in my main blip of Mercat Cross was used for quite a big scene in Season 1. Mercat is a version of the word we know as market place. The first extra is the entrance to the palace and the second extra is a delightful building in Back Causeway.
