LIFE!!!

twelve

On my walk today I visited a stone circle known locally as the Twelve Apostles. Old legends say that the Apostles actually made it, except for Judas who wasn't there and so there are only 11 stones. In reality the circle pre-dates the apostles by about 3000 years - it was constructed during the Bronze Age. There were originally 12 stones but one was damaged by a  plough and removed sometime before 1837. The circle is the largest on the Scottish mainland and the seventh largest in the UK.

All but one of the stones are Silurian rock - the nearest place where they could have been quarried is near Irongray Church, two miles away. Here's a wee film about it. My favourite stone in an extra.

I did a bit of gardening later until driven inside by pesky midges :-(
