A lot of history

I love having breakfast out in a cafe, and we found a good one. A little visit to the Oxfam shop of course, and checked out their book section:) Then to the GPO/Easter Rising museum, which is excellent, modern, using different media to show and explain, and plenty of short films by historians, giving context. Then we walked along to the Famine Way memorial, which commemorates 1500 people forcibly thrown off their land in Roscommon at the height of the famine in 1847. They were escorted the 100 plus miles as they walked to Dublin, and then loaded on to ‘coffin’ ships which took them to Canada. Less than half survived.  I thought the memorial was really powerful, especially the man carrying his dead child. 
Then to a bus to Sandymount and Poolbeg strand. A beautiful beach, where you can see across to Dun Laoghaire in the distance. Interesting as they have a beautiful nature reserve there - masses of birds singing. But also on the same peninsula is a giant processing plant turning waste into power.
