A Beautiful Young Buck Pays a Visit
It was the middle of the afternoon when my husband called me out to the living room to look at a deer that was grazing along the edges of the yard. I brought my camera out when a young buck stepped out from the foliage.
And what a show he put on for us, as he munched all around, walked past the butterfly garden, nibbled here and there, and then strolled back the path past the house toward the deck. We watched with glee from our big front windows.
At various points, the young buck stopped and groomed. He licked his back, his legs, and even the tips of his little black hooves! We'd never seen such a thing! It was adorable! The young buck's antlers are wrapped in velvet, as. you can see.
At one point, the buck was so close to us that I had to sort of step forward at an angle to peer down. Then up came his head, right in the midst of all of the the vegetation! You may see that shot in the extras. It reminded me of that character from Laugh-In, one of the Arte Johnson ones, the guy always peering out from behind the bushes!
The deer appeared quite fuzzy, and I wondered what it would be like to touch him. When I posted pictures to Facebook, a friend and fellow deer lover commented that the young buck had probably been kicked out by his mom and was on his own now.
When the new fawns are born in springtime, the mom kicks out last year's fawn to fend for itself. That story made me feel sad for this young fella, but we are rooting for him. He looks strong and healthy, and we will watch out for him as best we can. Welcome to our yard, beautiful young buck!
I have two soundtrack songs for this gorgeous youngster. First is David Bowie, with All the Young Dudes. Second is Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb, with Run Wild.
