"Let there be Light!"

I've pondered for a while whether I should change the tubes in our kitchen light fitting from fluorescent to LED, and when one of the old tubes failed recently I decided this was as good a time as any. Of course I knew that the wiring would need changing to some extent as LED tubes don't need a "ballast" or an external starter. Anyway I found some LEDs in our local DIY which make the job very easy (as long as the fitting has induction coils for ballast rather than electronic ballast). The starter has to be removed from the circuit but these tubes came with what they call an "LED Starter" which in fact has a similar case to a normal starter with the contacts simply connected together inside. So all I had to do was to swap the "starters" and fit the new tubes. (Well, I also had to give the light fitting a good clean as my Editor said "you're not going to put new tubes into that dirty old fitting, are you?!" She was right of course so it's now sparkly clean.)

So far we're very pleased. They come on instantly and give really good light - for just over 1/3 of the amount of electricity.
