A happier mural

A morning spent walking around the walls of Derry with a guide, who spoke about recent history and really far back history - and how things connect. He was very interesting and knowledgeable. We came across a fun mural, whereas the others were pretty serious. This commemorates the great Derry band the Undertones. Remember Teenage Kicks? And from the walls we looked down onto Free Derry (ie a no go area for British troops in the troubles) the streets of which were also the location for Derry Girls, which was really filmed where it was set. That’s the first extra.
We went on to the Ulster folk park - where old buildings have been re-erected to keep a tangible memory of the past. It was interesting, but my favourite thing was the view of nearby countryside, looking out of the park. The Emerald Isle is an apt name. We heard a bit about farming here, it’s nearly all small family farms of average 70 acres. Hard intensive work, and not enough income to live on, some family members need to work off farm. Very high quality food is produced here. Mainly beef, lamb, potatoes, barley.
