Brick works

A beautiful morning for a walk on the cliff top towards the remains of an old windmill and on to this view of Porth Wen brickworks.  Now disused it was operational during the late 19C until 1949.  Not a particularly successful venture, possible due to the position -  it was difficult to access even from the sea - it became unviable by mid 20C.  The footpath to the beach near the works was vague, overgrown with brambles and we decided to take a look another day by approaching from a different point. When looking for information later on the works and land are privately owned, comments from ‘trespassers’ recommend making an effort to visit the works although to be aware from a safety point of view.

A warm, breezy day with clear views out to sea and along the coast line. It was noticeable we didn’t see or hear many birds, luckily spotted a few butterflies, mostly the common blue and masses of foxglove.

From internet
Porth Wen Brickworks is a now disused Victorian brickworks which produced fire bricks, made from quartzite used to line steel-making furnaces. The substantial remains include a number of buildings and the remains of some of the machinery, but has some damage from sea erosion. The site is a scheduled monument.
