Day 16 - Saaremaa Island

The sky was overcast when we got up at 6.30 and it rained heavily all the way to Saaremaa. We got first a ferry (€20.60) to a smaller island then a causeway. We called in to look at a meteorite crater, formed they suggest, 300,000 years ago, en route to our campsite (€25). There’s a big pond and lots of mozzies.

While parking up we got stuck in soft soil. However we had sandmats and I got out the pointy end of my walking pole and a spoon to dig a big enough hole to fit the sandmat into so that Mr C could get the van out. ( I thought of #2 daughter who spent a few days in Sudan laying down sandmats to cover only a few kilometres on her TransAfrica truck journey). We have chosen our pitch more carefully this time.

I think the sun might appear later. While we waited for it we had a walk to the shore which had a view of the Gulf of Riga. A pair of flamingoes were standing just off-shore but my phone wasn’t good enough for the distance to blip them. There was also a war memorial to the Germans and Soviets killed in a battle here in 1944.

161 miles today

This puddle is the crater formed by the meteor.
