Day 17 - Panga Pank, windmills and 2 churches

We got off early on a beautiful sunny morning to fit in enough time to see a few of the sights before heading back to the mainland.

First stop was Panga Pank. Pack means cliff and 25m metre limestone drop into the Baltic is a cliff by Estonian standards. After all they put up road signs to warn of a 5% incline. Actually it was quite pretty as the sea was clear. There are some rather gruesome legends about the spot involving hurling male babies into the sea.

From there we went to admire a group of 5 windmills. There was a visitor centre where for €7 each you could walk among the . . We elected to view from the road.

I was interested in seeing a 14th century kirk, Karja, along the road which the guidebook said had a bas-relief of a village scene. It had a few interesting stone carvings but not that. I asked the warden woman (who was friendly!) and she said others had made the same mistake and it wasn’t her church. Turned out it was supposed to be at Kaarma Kirk so we took a 40 minute detour. Again an interesting church but no bas relief and nobody to ask.

We cut our losses and headed for the ferry.

We drove 175 miles to a wild camp south of Parma, overlooking marshland with the sea to the west. An Australian couple have the other van here. He set up a shell company in France to get it and insurance in order to spend a year travelling.

The wind will keep away the mozzies tonight.

Jenny had a busy morning getting us tickets for the book festival. #2 daughter had a great day in London on the Legal Walk to raise awareness for legal representation for everyone and raise money for charities that provide legal support for people who can't afford it. Thousands of people attended. Poor #3 daughter had technical issues is saving her on-line A level marking which was very stressful as she thought 3 hours’ work had gone. She has 600 essays to mark.
