Alien?

I came across a new (to me) life form today. I was sorting out one of the beds in the polytunnel, ready to plant my tomatoes in their final growing place when I noticed something white about the size of a pea trying to push through the soil. I dug up a scoop of soil and found that what I had spotted had just been the tip of the iceberg. This very pale plump creature, more than an inch long and with eight long legs, was like nothing I had ever seen before so I made sure I photographed it before carefully relocating it to a safe area where it could remain undisturbed while it develops into its final stage as a fully fledged beetle. Then it was time to do a bit of research to find out what I had just had a close encounter with and it seems that this is a stag beetle pupa, although I am happy to be corrected if anyone out there knows any different.
