The weather was not kind this morning. It was raining, so we decided to do the museums of Olot. They were not disappointing. Firstly, there was free entry to an 18th century nobleman‘s house. One room was given over to a nativity scene that was huge. It covered three walls and, in fact, the nativity itself was only a minor feature. The whole thing was incredibly detailed and made of clay and paper. The main town museum had a special exhibition of a famous local sculpter who created both religious sculptures and local figures. The main museum hosted works from the pastoral 19th century art school and modernism. All the descriptive panels were in Catalan, but we were given useful guides in French and English. One thing that impressed me about this provincial town, is how clean and modern its centre is. Unless you travel abroad in Europe, you do not realise how far the UK has slipped in terms of its local services and the crumbling of its infrastructure. Maybe after the election, there will begin a long and necessary process of rebuilding.
