A Day In The Life

Ms Potter

The warm weather brings insects to the garden and finding them during my walkabouts makes me happy, especially if I’m able to get a photo. Some are old friends but many are new • Here’s today’s discovery: Potter Wasp on Swamp Milkweed • The female builds a mini hollow pot of mud which can take up to two hours, and hundreds of trips. She lays an egg inside suspending it on a fine thread. Next she must find a caterpillar or several to place inside with the egg. She stings the butterfly or moth larvae to paralyze it to keep it fresh for her young one to feed on. Lastly she seals the pot before flying off to build another • Insects are fascinating! • The adult potter wasp feeds on nectar and pollen • Peace & Love
