A Sop to tourism
We left Edinburgh around 9.15 this morning after a fun couple of nights with Daughter Two. It was reasonably sunny to begin with, but once on the M9 and heading west the dark clouds began to loom! It’s a strange thing that the weather usually changes around Callander and today was no exception. The light rain began after we’d driven through the town and continued most of the way home.
We Stopped at the Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum (as one would expect) for a coffee. This café, gift shop and supermarket used to be called the Green Welly Shop - I think a change of ownership prompted a change of name, substituting an ‘H’ for a ‘T’. It must have been a quick replacement job, as the letter was missing - my Blip today! I think that ‘Sop’ might be a good name to keep - it’s a real sop to the passing tourist trade, full of tat! It didn’t help that my cappuccino was only three-quarters full, was barely hot and had NO CHOCOLATE SPRINKLES!!
We were approaching Connel Bridge, barely five miles from home, when the traffic began to queue and came to a stop outside the Oyster Inn. Signs ahead said ‘Road Closed’! Obviously nobody was being allowed to go into Oban and the diversion sign pointed back the way we’d come. The man on duty - not a policeman - told the car in front to go back and through Inveraray - this route would be 95 miles! He then pointed us to the diversion sign, but we turned up towards the bridge and down a back road, along with lots of other locals. Lots of churned-up verges! Nightmare!
When we got home I Googled to try to find out what had happened. Apparently at 1.55 last night a man was hit by an HGV in the centre of Oban and his body was later found by the side of the road a mile and a half north! No further information, but the road was still closed nearly 12 hours later. Very strange.
