Afternoon Tea at Bassenthwaite Lake Station

To celebrate their significant birthdays this year, I joined friend R, one of the birthday trio, for Afternoon Tea at Bassenthwaite Lake Station. This former station had been turned into a restaurant and after acquiring an oversized railway carriage that had been used in the filming of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, the Afternoon Tea business began. The Station had been sold off in the 1960’s. The review of the railways had been started by the Tory government, then finished by Labour.
A significant portion of the rural railway lines were closed as a result of a Chairman of the National Railways Board named Beeching. They closed down 55% of stations and 30% of route miles. They also lost about 68 thousand jobs. The name of Beeching has been infamous ever since.
The Afternoon Tea was delicious though :-)
