Samarkand . . .
. . . is possibly the most famous of the Silk Road cities, with its beautiful blue-tiled buildings. The city was the capital of Tamerlane and we spent the day visiting the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, Ulugh Beg’s observatory, the huge cathedral-mosque Bibi Khanum, and the Necropolis. Registan Square is one of the most famous sites, surrounded on three sides by the madrassahs of Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori. It is said the square and madrassahs influenced other sites, including the great square in Isfahan, Iran, and the Taj Mahal in India.
