Don’t trust the government.

In 1943 the residents of Tyneham village in Dorset, were evicted from their homes by the government so the area could be used for preparations for the D day landings. Their compensation amounted to the value of what was in their gardens. The squire who owned the village was compensated. 
They were promised that after the war they could return to their homes. Despite protests, letters to prime ministers and questions in parliament they never returned. The village is now a tourist attraction, owned by the MOD and still used on certain days as a live firing range.
The only buildings that remain as the were are the school building and the church, with the school classroom laid out with the children’s writings.
It is a fascinating piece of history which I intend to read up on a little more .
