one day in France

Fun and games with the new girls

Since New Year we’ve only had two hens left from last year’s new intake of eight. Two died of natural causes and the other four were killed and half eaten by unknown suspects (I think it was the buzzard).
Now one of them is broody, egg production is down, and as today was the day of the monthly market in Saintes, we went along to buy six new hens. Well they only had five brown girls left (although they call them red here) and the price has gone up to 14€ each! We paid our 70€ and took them home, and this photo was just as we tipped them out of the box and they got their first look at their new home!
You can see by the size and redness of their combs that one is a little bit older than the others, and she actually laid an egg for us this afternoon!
One of her friends ventured outside and managed to escape the coop, getting stuck between two fences, so My F (who needs to weed that area more regularly) was nominated to cut down the head height nettles and rescue the silly hen!
The three timid hens stayed in the henhouse, where broody hen squawked and scolded them all afternoon, and the other original girl ran back and forth telling us there were strangers in her house, and she wasn’t happy!
It isn’t ideal introducing new hens during daylight, if you do it at night, they seem to be absorbed into the flock more easily, but what can you do if you buy them in the morning and don’t want to leave them in the box?
They’ve all been shut into the henhouse for the night now, and hopefully they will all be happy in the morning!
