The Lozarithm Lens

After... (Tuesday 2nd July 2024)

By lunchtime the kitchen floor was coming along (see Extra). I went into Calne to eat some fish and chips in the Pocket Park, and by the time I returned it was all but finished.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Paul Desmond - Take Ten (recorded 25 June 1963, Webster Hall, New York NY)
Paul Desmond (alto sax), Jim Hall (gtr), Eugene Wright (acoustic bass), Connie Kay (drums)
While I was playing an old Iggy Pop radio show from 2020 in my study, the chap laying the floor was listening on the kitchen remote speakers. It was his first exposure to the Iggy Pop Confidential and he plans to listen to further episodes on Sundays in future.
One of the pieces aired was this sequel to the Dave Brubeck's Quartet Take Five, on which Paul Desmond had played alto sax. Take Ten is a composition similar to Take Five in terms of rhythm, chord structure and melody.
The drummer Connie Kay had recorded with Lester Young, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. As a session drummer he had played on Shake, Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner and Ruth Brown's (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean among others and since 1955 he had been a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Later, long after this recording,  he played drums on several Van Morrison albums including  Astral Weeks, Saint Dominic's Preview andTupelo Honey.
