Lerwick
The sea had quite a swell in the early hours of the morning but it could have been a lot worse (and may still be!) but we arrived safely in Lerwick around 7.00am. We had decided to have a leisurely day exploring the town and set off a while after breakfast to find a good coffee which we succeeded in doing.
I really liked Lerwick with its old buildings, narrow streets and even narrower closes. I can highly recommend the museum as a place where one can learn all there is to learn about Shetland: its varied geology, early inhabitants and how the way of life has developed up to the present day. We have heard several times now how Orkney and Shetland both belonged to Norway (or Denmark, depending on one’s point of view) until the 15th century when the king of Norway, Denmark and Sweden couldn’t afford the dowry for his daughter to marry James the third of Scotland so he handed over Orkney and Shetland as a balance of the payment!
Of course, no visit to Lerwick would be complete without finding the police station and the house (extra) of Jimmy Perez, the detective from the books by Ann Cleaves and the tv crime series “Shetland”.
Thank you those who suggested that I should try to publish my blip through my browser rather than the app but I’m afraid that didn’t work either because the Wi-Fi on the ship is too weak to support the uploading of photographs any way except through the app. I did manage to post yesterday’s extras when I was ashore today. So, I will struggle on, doing the best I can :-))
