Invisible Cities

I met up with a friend and former colleague for lunch and a chat at Salford Museum and Art Gallery.

She had to head back to work and I headed upstairs to look at the Invisible Cities exhibition. It’s all about Salford’s transformation between 1952 and 1974, and is a juxtaposition of photographs, film and TV stills, architectural drawings, maps, memories, and statements from publications published in the period. It was a period of huge change in the city.

All fascinating. The most bizarre image ? Well, in terms of film A Taste of Honey and Love on the Dole featured of course. But I had never heard of Charlie Bubbles directed by Albert Finney (himself a Salfordian). How Liza Minnelli standing up in the rear of an open top gold Rolls Royce filming the demolition sites of Salford fits into the plot I have no idea. It’s a long way from Cabaret.
