Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

What a day!

Awake during the night to hear a bit of the election results coming in. But the Exit Polls at 10pm were exciting enough!

But apart from that excitement, I set off for my eye consultation. In fact, I had decided in the morning to just leave it- I do not NEED to be able to see the tennis clearly. Nor yet do I NEED to see the football. I could wait 2/3 months for my NHS appointment, especially after my wee pal in Jersey says that the wait is 2 YEARS there!!

However, I went along to my consultation, and was most impressed with the set up - the facilities (good coffee machine in the waiting room) and the service. There were at least eight different very hi-tech machines for examining eyes. This took ages. Then I met with an ophthalmologist who did more tests, then gave her verdict. Cataracts in both eyes, though only the left eye is really bad at the moment.

And so, the upshot is: I’m going to get both eyes done at the same time. This month! In time for the Olympics.

Afterwards, being in the West End, an area I rarely find myself in, I popped in to a lovely old pub that I’ve always admired. It has big stained glass windows, parquet floors, red leather seats, and on the soundtrack as I came in was ‘Dreams’ by the Cranberries - my absolute favourite to get me going on the cross trainer in the days when I was still trying to stay healthy.

Then I continued my tour of the West End by stopping in at one of the city’s most popular cafes, famous for pastries as well as meals. But NO pastries left!!! Then he found two, one with my name on it! When I came to pay, he asked if I liked the pastry. YES! So he went away, bagged the other pastry and gave it to me! JR has just had it with her coffee. Yum yum.

Abi and Pip came to visit when I got home, and we were able to sit out the back in the sunshine for a while. They’re off on holiday next week, and Pip is coming to stay with us for a few nights.

Watched Emma Raducanu win her match.

Oh, and I also had a big bag of fresh peas, my secret addiction.

What a day!
