Visiting the Old Folk

After the usual Saturday morning visit to the fish pier, we set off southwards with Daughter One for Kilmartin to see the refurbished Museum. Kilmartin Glen is one of the most amazing archaeological sites in Scotland, with a multitude of cairns, burial mounds, stone circles, rock art and more. The museum, as they say on their website, offers “a fascinating insight into the lives of our ancestors inhabiting the area over the last 12,000 years.” The collection has been enhanced by providing more space with a modern extension to the building though I can’t say I was too keen on that!
 
We had a wonderful wander round the museum followed by lunch, then a walk over to the nearest cairn, Glebe Cairn, under which in 1864 were found the graves of two people, buried possibly 5,000 years ago. Quite hard to take in.
 
On the way home we stopped at the Ardfern road end to walk up to the old cemetery. Strangely I can’t find it online, which is odd as there are war graves there. It’s a spooky place deep in the woods up a muddy track, several hundred yards from the road. My extra today.
