The Dingo Fence
We joined a tour from Coober Pedy out to the dingo fence. Erected in the 1940's to keep the dingos on the 'other' side. It is the longest fence in the world at 5600km long - longer than the Great Wall of China. The largest post in this photo is an original. It was built with a combination of local gidgee wood (branches) and iron star pickets. The wood posts have been there more than 80 years now and are still strong.
Very interesting history. One of the sad things about the fence is that when an emu runs into it, as soon as it's head goes through the wire it is a death sentence as emus cannot go backwards so they can't get out of the fence. Actually nor can kangaroos, but they are less likely to run into it. The bigger kangaroos can jump over it.
