MUCH older than me.
Still "turfing stuff out". Not that long ago RAZ Putin decided to go on holiday to Ukraine. It wasn't "all over by Christmas" and had unpleasant effects on prices.
I had an idea. - Comes the inevitable (other than "Taxes") some house emptying hound will pounce, empty the house, trot off to a sale and reap the benefits.
SO with that thought in mind plus reducing the amount of work for remaining relatives; another plus - I get the good of it not the House-breaker.
Not at all obvious in the extra here; there's a top shelf, with a mass of EPNS stuff + a little bit of Silver. Thus -two Hallmarked StS Serviette Rings, one engraved for me B B K and one plain, an StS Mustard Spoon and this. IF. you don't know - sorry about the Jargon (Habit) StS - Sterling Silver.
Between us we guessed it may have been a Wedding Present for Grandad Kane, the one we never met.
A bit of guessimetry involved - but:-
1. " The lion passant on an item of silver guarantees that the silver is at least 92.5% pure, which is the sterling standard."
2. Sovereign's head; guessimetric Victoria.
3. Z is a baddish year letters so many look so similar. Also - a problem in that IF this is true and t here are no exceptions "In 1786, the sovereign’s head mark changed from facing left to facing right." BUT, again guessimetrically, the direction altered with monarch, like coinage, which would make it OK for Victoria 1837-1901. Zs within her reign fell in '48, 74 & 99. Another of my famous - BUTs - Victoria's (Young) head was last seen in 1889 and not replaced by old head. SO - while the heads match up, the Zs don't seem to and nobody (family) we can ask.
4. I'm always amused that Birmingham, almost as far from the sea as one can get in England should adopt an Anchor as its symbol. Do NOT bother to explain, I've just not looked it up yet.
5. Maker's Mark - The only GU is "George Unite from c1873 George Unite & Sons" within six different time frames. We were a bit undecided - BUT - four of the six we can rule out leaving 1832 or 1873 - both to "modern".
