Driving to Europe
The alarm was set for 3.30am but I woke up at least an hour before then. I never sleep well when I know I have to get up early. We had packed the car last night so it was just the remaining few things to still go in the car plus the food items. I was just checking that the fridge was clear of foods Tommy would not be using while he is in the house, when Gavin came in and said everything was packed and we should go, and we were on our way by 4.15am. The car was so fully packed we could not see the boot or out the back window. About 30 minutes later when we were on the M25, I casually said to Gavin ‘did you remember to put Xena’s collar on before you put her in the car?’ Gavin looked stricken and said ‘what collar? I never put her in the car!’ Poor Xena had been left at home! We continued to the next junction where we could turn around to go back home to fetch Xena! In the 20 years we have been travelling to Switzerland every summer we have forgotten the odd thing but never our dog!! Thank goodness I said that then and it was not when we got out the car at Folkestone that we noticed we were dogless! We had a beautiful pink sunrise with mist covering the fields all around the motorway, it was a lovely start to the day.
It was only when we got to the Eurotunnel and I was standing in the queue getting coffees that I saw the TV screen with the news about the attempted assassination on Trump. Shocking news that an American presidential candidate had an assassination attempt on him, no matter how much you dislike the man that is not the solution. I found Biden’s response very weak, and when he repeated ‘it’s sick, just sick’ I had to smile as in young British adult slang ‘sick‘ means something very good.
Other than another half hour wait whilst in the Eurotunnel train due to signal failures, the journey was uneventful. It was difficult to take photos when you are driving along motorways all day, and our stops were not very scenic. This is an image as we were driving onto the Eurotunnel train to go on the crossing. It was very warm driving through France. We had a few stops to let Xena out and get fuel and finally got to Klosters our destination at about 7.30pm (that is with plus one hour). It was good to get here and unpack, the apartment was very warm as I think they have had hot weather here.
It was lovely to see that Kate was at Wimbledon today, looking lovely as usual - she received a standing ovation as she walked in. Very sweet that she was accompanied by her daughter. I expect George is with his dad at the football? Fingers crossed for England tonight!
