Day 17 Unquera to Llanes

A very long, exhilarating day mainly off road along cliff paths some more well defined than others. There were several alternative route options and I mixed and matched through out the day. Eating was a bit of a challenge, breakfast other than coffee and orange juice was really not great and food opportunities along the way were extremely limited. I walked 18 miles on a toblerone ice cream , a café con leche, some of Penny's peanuts and 3 fruit chews from Lidl bought somewhere in the Basque Country. My walking pals, would be horrified. I finished the afternoon in Llanes mildly relieved to have arrived at my destination which had been visible for a couple of hours.
I crossed railway lines, electric fences, dodgy bridges with bits missing all with terrific views of the Picos de Europa and the Bufones de Arenillas – a geological feature where cracks have formed in the rock cliffs allowing for the eruptions of seawater when the conditions are right. I could hear the roar of the waves but it wasn’t sufficiently rough/windy to observe the phenomenon. The goats seemed oblivious to it all.
I replenished calories this evening, because of the football folk seemed to be eating early and I got a superb meal just after 8, for €17 which included a bottle of wine, I restricted myself to 2 glasses.
A much easier day tomorrow so time to explore Llanes which I haven’t had time to do.
30k, 730m ascent, 4 pilgrims, one conversation.
