Fast Car

The monthly car meet at Wray had a motorsport theme so I thought I’d go and have a look to see what had turned up.
Unfortunately - for someone of my generation - what turned up was mainly Mk2 Escorts mixed in with the McLarens and MGs that were there last month. Ok, I get it that those two marques are strongly associated with motorsport, but I was hoping to see more cars that had actually had a competitive life. And I say “unfortunately” in relation to the Escorts because these are cars I used to own - and compete in - so tend to look on them as being a bit “meh” unless they are exceptionally well turned out.
And much as I’d like to say that the Jaguar D Type in the photo is a genuine Le Mans winning car, it is in fact a replica. Though that is doing it a bit of an injustice as it’s actually one of 10 cars built especially for a race series. The fact that one of those cars was owned by F1 design guru Adrian Newey shows how well they were regarded. The body is an accurate copy of the Le Mans winning long nose D Types, but the engine, suspension and brakes are all uprated, meaning this version is even faster than the originals. The current owner registered it for the road when he acquired it, though I suspect it might be a bit of a handful on the narrow country lanes around Wray!
Despite there not being as much to see as I’d hoped, it was still an enjoyable evening and I look forward to the next one. I might even be able to get to one of the bike events as well, if we get some dry weather for a change!
