Caen Hill Locks

Base for the last few days has been Devizes. Today is leaving day, but before departing I decided to spend the morning exploring the town.

First I walked along the Kennet and Avon Canal. There are 29 locks in the town section, 16 of which are consecutive and form the impressive flight up and down Caen Hill.

Latterly I further explored the Wiltshire Museum. In addition to the Neolithic galleries there is an exhibition of photographs of Ernest Howard Farmer. His photograph of a Wiltshire Thatcher (extra) will be familiar to Led Zeppelin fans. I also bought an interesting booklet about the making of the film of Far from the Madding Crowd, mainly shot in Devizes. I took a photograph of the lovely church of St John last night (extra). This view apparently forms the opening scene of the film.

The hottest day of the year it seems. At one point my car thermometer registered 30°c.
