Buddleia

When we moved into our house, decades ago, one of the back garden shrubs was, I confidently asserted, a buddleia. A well-known TV gardener advised that such plants should be pruned hard in the winter. I took that advice.

Our bush failed to flower for about ten years and then slowly started to recover. I was puzzled. Then I studied a gardening book and identified the plant: not a buddleia but a lilac.
