The Lozarithm Lens

The Front Yard (Friday 26th July 2024)

There have been very few butterflies in the garden this year - that I have seen, anyway - just a few large whites and the very occasional red admiral or peacock, so while I was in the kitchen at lunchtime I was very pleased to see something fluttering from one plant to another outside. Quickly grabbing a camera I was just in time to catch this female gatekeeper at the far end of the Front Yard before it flew off to guard someone else’s gate.

I also rescued a bumblebee from a spider's web across the porch skylight with the aid of a broom.

Exciting times ;-).

Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Sinead O'Connor - Mind Games (recorded 1988-1989)
It was on this day a year ago that we lost the wonderful Sinead O'Connor. According to the eventual release of the coroner's report she died of natural causes. There was a documentary about her last weekend on Radio 4 presented by Jo Whiley, who had interviewed her a few times, and it included her version of this John Lennon song that I had never heard. I discovered that it had been left off her classic album I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got, finally appearing on a 2CD deluxe edition of the album that was released in 2009. Incidentally, a very illuminating documentary about her life, Nothing Compares, is being rebroadcast on Sky Arts tonight (1900 hr).
