Windrush

Since I was last here Waterloo Station has introduced the National Windrush Monument. Prince William apparently unveiled it, an unveiling which I hope was accompanied by some conciliatory remarks about the UK’s historical role in subjugation and the slave trade. Otherwise it seems a strange decision to choose a representative of a monarchy with deep links to colonisation and global inequality. That aside, it’s good that this monument is displayed prominently in one of the country’s busiest transport hubs, after the shambolic and shameful treatment of many members of the Windrush generation.

Another very pleasingly timed event whilst I am in London has been Jackie’s birthday gathering in Elephant and Castle. She assembled an entertaining gang, consisting for me of various new faces and old friends. Time passed very quickly. Over several hours a significant number of pints was consumed, and much quality chat about politics, life, work and travel was had. Amongst a liberal crowd, there is a general relief and hopeful outlook that now we have binned the scandal-ridden and corrupt Tories, the country can get back to some semblance of good governance.

Jackie and I always enjoy partaking in some good old-fashioned Tory bashing. Thanks to the passionate chat and numerous pints, a fairly dense and satisfying alcohol haze descended by evening.
