Long Day - Busy Day
Dressed in best bib & tucker and out to Helston for a funeral. Friend John, the family had requested we act as pallbearers, my word! Those that know St Michaels at Helston will know that the church sits on a steep hill with a series of steps from the gate up to floor level of the church.
We did it but for four men, two over 60, two over 70, it was a real effort. The lift from the hearse, climbing the steps, the walk into the church and then the manoeuvring of the coffin over the trestles followed by the reverse procedure at the end of the service required real effort and concentration. The lift out of the hearse and the comparatively short walk to the grave site required effort but nowhere near as much - but - John was our friend, our Shipmate and deserved our best efforts.
At the Branch meeting in the evening we celebrated four birthdays, the three shown in the main picture plus Jackie H’s, (not shown). Kay, the lady in the main picture on the right above, is an ex Dental Nurse who served with the WRNS, Kay celebrated her 95th birthday.
Cake & Rum, perfect end to the day.
