Wiesen Viaduct

Today was a very hot day - we met friends for a hike and decided on a route that goes through a forest so we could be cool in the shade. We drove to Monstein, which is near Davos, and planned to walk from Monstein to Wiesen, but when we got there and started our walk we found the route was blocked by temporary gates due to a rockfall as it was deemed unsafe to walk there.

A quick change of plan and we drove further down the valley to Wiesen, and then walked back to Filisur. You set off from the Wiesen station and walk over this viaduct - it is very high over the gorge, and the railway runs alongside the footpath. I was glad a train was not passing by when we were on that footpath as it is scary enough being so high up. The viaduct was built between 1906-9, and is 292 ft high and 210 ft long. It's main span is 180 ft long which makes it one of the longest main spans of any masonry bridge. As we were walking over the viaduct one of our friends tripped and fell, so that was not a good start to the walk, but she was okay.

When we reached Filisur we had a long wait for the train to take us back to where our car was parked at Wiesen. It was so hot sitting at the station, and when we got back to Wiesen which is rather low in the valley it was 34.5C. It cooled down as we drove higher and was 29C in Davos. We stopped off in Davos as I had a few things I needed - one thing being a decent balsamic vinegar and I found the good brand we use in the UK so I was pleased about that.

It was not a hugely long walk today but the heat today was quite intense at times, Xena found it very hot and has been sleeping ever since we got back home again.
