Sally Mair - Loving life

New York Day 1

So many different pictures, here is a sample. We got the train from Newhaven in Connecticut to Grand Central News York - wow two beautiful stations. We took a cab to our hotel which is right across the road from the site of the twin towers. The church in the picture is the Greek Orthodox Church built to replace the one destroyed in the 9/11 attack. It's white marble and quite stunning, it glows at night from the light inside. The picture top right is of the memorial on the site of the north tower. It's engraved with names all the way around. It's square with water running in over the edges then there is a second square deep in the centre where the water flows downwards into a dark hole. Very peaceful yet full of people.

After we'd checked in our hotel we headed for Central Park on the subway. We had a meal in a diner just opposite the Carnegie Hall. Portions here are just enormous I ate less than half of my meal and had thought I'd ordered something fairly small.
From there we walked up 7th Avenue to the Park, where we hired a pony and trap for an hour's tour of the southern third of the park. We'd never have managed on foot.
We headed back down by taxi into Manhattan and walked down to Battery point where we took the (free) ferry to Staten Island passing the Statue of Liberty on the way. The picture is of me in front of the tip of Manhattan as we move away.
We've had a lovely first day. Tomorrow is set to be very hot, so fingers crossed.
