History
Now to remember everywhere we’ve been today! Starting with a drive to a castle near Bath called Farleigh Hungerford. We spent an interesting couple of hours there. Mostly ruins but an interesting crypt with very rare lead coffins with 5 adults and 2 children. A little spooky. Good to be able to compare to the other 3 castles/remains we have seen this holiday.
From there, we drove to a tiny place called Stanton Drew where there are 3 circles of standing stones in fields behind some (lovely) houses. There are 5 parking spaces in the tiny cul de sac so we parked up, and proceeded to have our picnic, table chairs the lot, in the car parking space behind our car. It was 2pm and we hadn’t seen anywhere to stop. A few people looked and smiled, but they were other visitors to the stones. Then we packed up and walked between the houses to the field of stones. Always incredible sights. Early Neolithic I think it said. 3 separate circles. You can probable see them on google earth - between Bath and Bristol.
We left there at about 3.30 and headed back to the site, but went straight past and on to Glastonbury Tor. Found somewhere on the road to park, then walked. I bought some walking poles in the sales in Wells in the week, so they proved very useful. My knees in general are very weak. We got to the top to enjoy the energy and the views, along with quite a lot of other people. I persuaded Jon that we should have a short 10 minute meditation so we sat on the grass in the shadow of the tower (all that remains of a church 100’s of years old) Jon closed his eyes, and so did I. I class that as us both meditating!
We took the downward path slowly. I don’t think there were steps when we were here 21 years ago. Jon had then carried baby Henry on his back in a baby carrier. I just remember grass and a shallow hill climb! Memories can be deceiving.
Back to the campsite to start packing bits away ready for the off tomorrow.
We have really enjoyed this part of the country. We would definitely come back if we had the time. We have added it to the long list of places we will visit when we retire and set off for a year with the caravan!
