Fields of Gold
When speaking with my friend last week she spoke of how all of a sudden the fields had changed to a beautiful golden hue as the barley turned and started to ripen, sadly I lamented as usual here in Scotland we were a few weeks behind!!! We share a deep love of music and we share songs, some well known to us some new from one to the other; it may sound clichéd but it is a special thing, our thing if you will. As we spoke of the fields where she was walking we both turned to Fields of Gold the most beautiful of love songs about a love unrequited, love lost.
There have been many versions of this song most notably Eva Cassidy, indeed a lot of people think it is her own song but it was written and recorded by Sting and it is his version that to my mind is by far the best. He sings it with an almost distant feeling in his voice a deep and meaningful lyric delivered with heart rendering angst. It is a again a song I have sung many times though only ever to myself as I could never do it justice to dare to sing it in public!!
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
I passed this field as I walked this evening, the barley on the turn, the vibrant green blending away towards the yellows and golds that will prevail in a few days, I liked the contrast of the colours in the field against the sky, I liked the tractors tracks down the hill and the trees breaking the horizon. I closed my eyes and felt the warm breeze kiss my face, and sift through my hair, the rustle of the barley as the ears chattered in the breeze. I sat a while and enjoyed reliving my conversation and imagined as I do often my friends favourite walk and how the descriptions of the colours and the sea, the sights, sounds and smells transported me there in my minds eyes to share those evenings too.
I hope you enjoy the shot, I found it peaceful and tranquil with the beautiful melody of the song in my mind
