Stonehenge

As if I needed to tell you! But we are now home after another history filled day of the oldest kind.

The satnav said 5 hours to home, but with Stonehenge one hour up the road from Rod’s, and our brand new English Heritage membership aching to be used just one more time this holiday, it seemed mad not to.

We slept well in the caravan in the garden, then were up at 7 to share an early breakfast with mum and Rod, before getting on the road to arrive when Stonehenge ‘opens’. It seems strange that something so symbolic for everyone in this country should have an open and closed, but it is very much controlled by English Heritage and the access with the visitor centre has changed in recent years I think. Well we have never been in a position to afford the entry fee before (£33 each on the door!) but we parked in the coach bay, and at 9.25 it was already very busy. We were given wrist bands as members and advised that they were expecting 3000 visitors on coaches today, so to go straight to the stones. A shuttle bus ran us there - you could walk if you had more time. We were so glad we did as we had clear uninterrupted views of the stones from all angles. They guide you to walk around one way. Then we got back on the bus to the cafe/shop/exhibition, all of which we did. Being the ideal tourist I bought a badge for my camp blanket, an information brochure, a pen and a small hessian bag for - oh I don’t know what. I just liked it and I had money left in my purse!! No regrets, it was a great morning.

We left there at 12, and via M25 and A1M Jon drove to his parents in Melbourn. There we caught up with his older sister and her family who were also visiting. A cup of tea and an hour or so later and we then carried on, getting home at 7.

Everything has grown but some things have died. I have a lot of work to do in the garden, but I do have a kind of plan. Small goals.

Glad to be home, but we would like to go back to that area and our English Heritage membership is valid for 15 months, so we need to plan carefully!

The jobs of sorting out can wait until tomorrow.
