Octagonal Sundial
There are two identical very elaborate octagonal sundials at Newbattle Abbey with several sundial faces. They are dated 1635 so were constructed not many years after the Scottish Reformation when the abbey was converted into a house, although they predate most of the present house. The initials EWL and CAL represent Earl William of Lothian and Countess Anne of Lothian with the Lothian family motif of the sun with a coronet. Four maidens support the dial with four men above with scrolled beards. Like yesterday's blip, even though it was just after midday the time would indicate that it is 11 am.
