Jolly Jerseys

We’ve had a more relaxed day doing some shopping in Lanark and a bit of garden weeding. After lunch we all drove to Strathaven as Pete had some work to do for an hour, so Jen and I took a walk to the farm which sells all manner of milk products from their Jersey herd and has converted a barn into a cafe. Here we paused for cuppas and enjoyed watching the cows over in the yard.

The farm operates sophisticated technology for milking. Two giant roombas operate periodically from their docking stations with one of them quietly pushing the hay closer to the feeding cows whilst the other hoovers up the poo. We watched one cow walk away from the feed area and climb into the automatic milker with no human contact, to re emerge a short time later and resume eating.  If you have to farm cows then this must be a less stressful way to do it.

Once back in Strathaven we met Pete at the Waterside Restaurant for early dinner, yum.

Home tomorrow.
