Path from Arnside station.
This follows the old single track railway line. The line was originally built in 1866 and was used mainly for bringing coking coal from the Durham coalfields to the Furness Peninsular which was rich in iron ore.
The line was closed in 1966 although a short section linking
Arnside to local quarries at Sandside was not removed until 1972. In the 1960s the section in the blip was used as overnight parking for the Queen’s Royal train when she came to visit the Cavendish family at Holker Hall.
It now makes a good footpath along the side of the Kent Estuary.
