1945: The Enola Gay drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima
Quote Of The Day
"Nagasaki and Hiroshima remind us to put peace first every day; to work on conflict prevention and resolution, and dialogue; and to tackle the roots of conflict and violence."
(Antonio Guterres)
To comemmorate the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, I went to see the World Peace Bell in Motohama Ryokuchi Park, Amagasaki. I've never been to this park before. It's rather nice. I enjoyed sitting in the shelter beside the water lilly pond reading my book for a while before the heat moved me on (it was already 37°C or 98.6°F at 10:00.)
You can read here about the World Peace Bell Association. This bell was erected in Motohama Ryokuchi Park in September 2005.
We have survived 79 years without another atomic bomb (or far more powerful hydrogen bomb) being used in conflict, but looking at places like Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Ukraine and North Korea, I fear we are taking an increasingly huge risk daily. Far more people need to heed Mr. Guterres' advice.
