Westward panorama from King Henry VIII mound
The sign says:
The westward panorama towards Windsor Castle from King Henry VIII mound in Richmond Park.
- whence, turning eastwards, St.Pauls cathedral stands alone in the 10 mile keyhole vista into the City of London.
... and sure enough you turn around and there is an avenue through trees towards the city called ' The Way' and marked with ornate iron gates across the park. From this strategic point there is also a mounted telescope which when pointed along 'The Way' does indeed reveal ... the tower of St. Pauls. However, I was not equipped with the long lens so until I go back there you'll have to make do with the view to the West and take my word for it.
... and at your feet is a stone carved with a spiralling poem:
Heavens! what a goodly Prospect spreads around.
Of hills and Dales and Woods and Lawns and Spires.
And glittering Towns and gilded Streams till all
The stretching Landskip into Smoke decays!
