Worm's Head view of the coast (backblip)
The day of the excursion dawned. Today we were going to beat the tide and get across the causeway to Worm's Head, the tidal island near Rhossili beach. I wore my walking boots, but even so it was a tricky, rocky walk, one where I feared for my ankles. K scampered across in her beach shoes, those little rubber things for swimming in! At the base of the inner head, we rested, the K went off to climb the big lump of rock and came back and encouraged me to do the same, because of the wildlife and the views. I scrambled up the side, and was rewarded with the view above. Then K texted me to say a bell was being rung, and we'd better make our way back (we don't salivate like Pavlov's dogs when we hear bells ringing, but we do fall into line. The nuns trained us well)!
Back on the mainland at last, we went to visit the wildflower meadows of the Veil/Vile. I was disappointed that the sunflower growing area had been turned into a cafe selling jumbo hot dogs at 6.99, but people were buying them, as well as sunflowers at 1.70 a stem. The wildflower meadows were spectacular, though.
An afternoon on Rhossili beach followed, then because we couldn't eat out in Rhossili (everything closes at about 6 pm on a Thursday), we drove to Port Eynon, where K got a baked potato to eat on the beach. It wasn't totally what she wanted ( she had a Greek taverna fantasy about a flatbread, served hot in a beautiful cafe, just minutes after we'd come up from the beach), and I didn't need chips again, but it was good to see what other resorts looked like. Port Eynon has an accessible beach and some delightfully winding streets, and caravans near the sea . The narrow road down to the village reminds me of the road to Port Isaac in Cornwall. Say no more? The bus made it down, and so did we.
I think I was planning to hang out with quiet music in tent after my shower, but K went to bed early, having relaxed by reading a book. I'd finished both of mine, so I read a magazine by the light of my head torch, and had to play strange karmic music silently in the night, because the tent was so incredibly noisy.
If you want to know why, read the next entry....
