The Hidden Lane

Backblip
I had a good nights sleep surprisingly as the room had been quite hot. I woke up to the sound of a baby Black backed gull calling for it’s parents, what a racket !
Had a lazy few hours , shower and watching the Olympics. Left the Guest house at 10.30pm and made our way to the Hidden Lane tucked away down an alley way. It’s full of colourful buildings with small business set up.
We had breakfast in the Hidden Cafe. Very tasty. I had pancakes, crispy bacon and some maple syrup. Mike had scrambled egg and salmon on sourdough toast.
I did not take my camera with me so used Mikes phone.
When we were wandering a smartly dressed gentleman got out of a car and walked towards us.
“Do you like our Hidden Lane ?” He asked. “Yes” we replied “very much” .
He went on to tell us that it was his idea and with lots of hard work and convincing the Council he was able to create what we see today. https://theglasgowwrap.substack.com/p/the-man-who-who-built-finniestons
He told us that he had just bought some of the old Glasgow subway carriages that he hopes to turn into little studios.
I was brave enough to ask if we could take his photo which he was happy to do.
He also told us that many years ago a lady had given him a parcel neatly wrapped in brown paper. He had to put it to the back of his wardrobe and not open it until the lady had died. He had forgotten all about the parcel until he found it some years after her death. Inside were hundreds of rolls of film many of old Glasgow. The photos are on display in his Gallery in Hidden Lane. The photographers name was Margaret Watkins and I’m pretty sure we saw an exhibition about her a few years ago.
We walked to the park and sat by the bowling green watching people playing tennis. It was lovely and warm in the sunshine.
We walked to the back of the museum and bought an icecream from the van, very nice.
A short walk to the bus stop to catch a bus to the station. We bought some rolls to eat on the journey and waited for our bus. A good journey home. Chinese take away for dinner
