Auchencairn Jubilee Lamp
…was erected in 1897 on Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, by public crowdfunding (as we would say today).
The cast iron lamp stands in the middle of the small village on the Solvay Coast. The Dalbeattie-Dundrennan road leads through the hamlet as it has for ages.
The lamp was gas powered, and originally served as a drinking fountain as well. The now flower pot was meant for horses, a small overflow “for smaller animals”.
There are extras from Sandyhills beach, further northeast on the coast, at low tide.
