Not a Giant Thistle

We visited our friend Michele in County Durham today on our way to Scotland.  Her garden is a blaze of colour, and this Jerusalem Artichoke struck me as a really beautiful plant.  It is over 6 ft tall, but won't get enough sunshine to produce a proper fruit. The further north we go, the shorter the growing season.
