Nicky and her Nikon

A little stream

This morning Gavin left early to go to Zurich for the day as he was working in his office there. I was going to go with him and spend the day exploring Zurich and visit the modern art museum but it was so hot I decided against it. I was worried I would spend the day killing time waiting for him and being uncomfortably hot.

Luke and Meriel went off on a high level hike and took Xena with them, it was too hot for me to do that today and I felt like just relaxing. I spent the morning doing chores - a few loads of laundry, ironing, and remaking the beds in the guest room. Later I went out and took some long exposure photos of the stream in the little valley above the apartment. I have been asked to do a talk on long exposures at our camera club for one of our members' evenings so I wanted to get a good sample of photos at various shutter speeds for my talk.

Adam was at home working and it was nice to have time with him. He (and Meriel) leave tomorrow and I am very mindful that my days with Adam are numbered, as he leaves for San Diego in December. I feel so terribly sad at the thought of him being so far away as we are a very close family.

Tommy is in the last weeks of his internship, and is very busy trying to finish off his projects at work and also cope with the mound of paperwork for his move to Germany. It is sad that Tommy and Inca were not able to come to Switzerland this year. Inca is currently in South Africa on a very exciting vet placement at a game reserve.

I read an interesting article about sport now that the Olympic Games are over. In a nutshell, too much is being invested in those sports that result in medals, and not in sports that have longer term public benefits. 'No amount of sport on television and no amount of gold medal ceremonies have been able to arrest the long-term decline in young people's activity rates, the obesity crisis or the sedentary nature of most of our lives.' Many of the countries that came top of the medal table are also the ones that rank highly as the most obese countries in the developed world.
